£220M funding for London public spaces
London Mayor Boris Johnson has pledged that £220 million will be spent on improving streets and public spaces in the capital, while green areas will also benefit from the funding.
The Mayor said that 50 public realm projects would take place over the next three years, with money being delivered through bodies such as the London Development Agency and Transport for London. Two guides outline plans to design better streets, roads and squares, along with green features such as water spaces.
Of the money set aside for investment, £180 million will go towards streets and public spaces. Landmarks in the capital will receive particular attention, with plans to redevelop Leicester Square and to introduce diagonal crossings in Oxford Circus.
Town centres on the outskirts of London, such as in Sutton, Richmond and Woolwich, will also be improved under the plans.
The leader of the London Green Party, Jenny Jones, criticised the Mayor, claiming that work was already in progress on many projects, while some were already complete.
