CARE Construction Challenge: contenders lay down gauntlet

Teams from across the construction industry are already signing up for July’s CARE Construction Challenge in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire.

The gauntlet is down

Sixteen teams are in so far, including entries from Bam Nuttall, Willmott Dixon, Costain, Balfour Beatty, Jacobs, Korec, Union Square, Ridge, GHA Livigunn, Westoak Construction, RDG Engineering, Capita Architecture, University of Bristol and DJ Goode and Associates.

NCE and sister title Ground Engineering will setting the standard, so the gauntlet is down.

The CARE Construction Challenge takes place on 2 July. It will see teams cover a marathon distance by biking forest tracks, canoeing on a river and a spectacular trail challenge on foot,
with a few mystery challenges thrown in.

There will also be a one hour bonus stage for the extra competitive and super fit.

£100,000 aim for charity

CARE aims to raise £100,000 from the challenge to support its poverty-fighting work in over 70 countries. Sheltering vulnerable people is a crucial aspect of CARE’s work.

“CARE’s work strikes a chord with the construction industry, as much of it is centred around what we consider the most important kinds of construction projects in the world,” said CARE Challenge manager Neil Munro.

“Erecting temporary shelter for families whose homes and lives have been devastated by war or natural disaster; providing water and sanitation systems for poor communities; or training people in safer and longer-lasting construction techniques to prevent loss of life following an emergency.

All are heavily dependent on engineering skills,” he said. CARE is currently working to rebuild homes and communities in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake, in Pakistan following the floods in August 2010, in Benin following flooding in September and in Liberia, assisting refugees from the Cote D’Ivoire.

Expert advice on training and fundraising

The CARE Challenge Team offers participants expert advice on training and fundraising.

The final challenge of the event will be summoning enough energy for the post-event reception where teams will toast the top fundraisers and celebrate a great achievement on the dance floor.

The CARE Construction Challenge is supported by NCE, Ground Engineering and construction management software provider Union Square.
