GRADUATE PROFILE
Ruth Bullen

Ruth Bullen graduated from Nottingham University in 2004 with a MEng in civil engineering. "I spent a few months travelling, to get that out of my system before joining the working world," she recalls. January 2005 saw Ruth taking up her first post as site engineer for a railway bridge project in Peterborough.

"It was a really good first project," says Ruth. "It was relatively small (Ł5M), but it was a good job to be put on in terms of my experience. It was a small team and I got to see everything. I was starting as a graduate engineer, but thrown in at the deep end." Ruth gets plenty of support though, so she does not feel she is facing tough decisions on her own. "There are plenty of people with loads of knowledge and they encourage you to look someone up and call them if you want to find out about something."

Ruth is currently involved in getting the systems and procedures set up for a new highways project Đ a dual carriageway in Corby Đ which is due to start soon. "I will have a more senior role on this project," says Ruth, "with some management, but I imagine that there will be lots of hands-on work as well." All this is right up Ruth's street.

"I enjoy the variety," she says. "I like being part of a team that is working to get something built, and being out there onsite, really being involved and not isolated in an office. There are all sorts of challenges every day, and that is what I go to work for."

Ruth is getting the most from Costain's structured training scheme. "The scheme is well set out and everything is in place to help me become a chartered engineer," she says. "It is up to you to drive it but if you do, the quality of the training is very good. I have just been to the annual graduate conference, meeting up with all the others who, like me, are coming to the end of their third year at university.
It was a good chance to network and catch up."
