Construction costs continue to rise in UAE

New research from EC Harris, published in its Construction Cost Bulletin, shows construction prices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi were almost 30% higher in March 2007 compared with a year before.

The most dramatic rises were in materials such as steel: steel channels and beams have risen by 80% since March 2006, while rebar has increased by 40%.Labour costs also increased by 20% in the year to March.Despite the rise in costs, the report reveals there has been no slowdown in construction, and it recommends that building elements with long lead times be procured as soon as possible to offset inflation. These elements include cement and aggregate, reinforcement, aluminium works, M&E equipment, especially those including copper, cladding and joinery.
