Cheap bridge rejected by Wearsiders

Sunderland City Council unveiled its alternative to the iconic £133M Wear Crossing this week, a £104M basic beam design.

This week the council launched a public consultation into whether the extra £21M needed to build an "iconic bridge" would be worthwhile (News last week).

Despite revealing a cheaper alternative, the iconic design by architect Stephen Spence and consultants Techniker, which won the design
competition in 2005, looks to be the popular among local residents.

An online poll run by the Sunderland Echo, found that 84% of Wearsiders support the £133M iconic bridge, with only 16% backing the £104M basic beam design.
