Channel tunnel fire: latest

A fire in the Channel Tunnel was reported to be finally extinguished at around 7am BST this morning, more than 16 hours after the blaze started.

The fire began in the northbound tunnel, close the French side.

Fire fighters have been using the escape tunnel to combat the blaze.

Once the fire was contained, the crews had to concentrate on around 20 further fires, started by the initial blaze.

300 fire fighters - 200 French and 100 British were involved in battling the inferno.

32 people on board the train carrying freight lorries where the fire began were led to safety yesterday evening. Up to fourteen are said to have suffered from burns or smoke inhalation.

Eurotunnel claims services may resume later today, but realistically this seems unlikely. It is expected to be early next week before any indication to cause of the fire is released.

Meanwhile Kent County Council and the Highways Agency has been forced to close the M20 to implement "Operation Stack", where waiting lorries are queued on the motorway.
