The power to change
NCE editor Antony Oliver introduces the Spring 2010 Insite magazine, aimed to promote civil engineering to students
We rely on civil engineers for a lot of different things, some you might not even be aware of. In this issue you’ll read how trains running at 400kmh will ease congestion on our public transport, bring the UK’s cities closer together and help the economy.
Civil engineers are also changing lives at the scenes of natural disasters. In Haiti, Chile, Cumbria and around the world engineers are keeping people safe and helping them rebuild their communities.
Meanwhile, in London, civil engineers are working to overhaul our Victorian infrastructure. The sewerage system is struggling and sewage is spilling out into the River Thames. Civil engineers can stop that happening.
And for more inspiration, Insite has all the details about the Big Bang fair in Manchester, a three-day event bursting with the most exciting aspects of science and engineering. Don’t miss the regional Big Bang fairs happening all around the country this summer.
Civil engineering affects our lives in many different ways - take a closer look and see what you find.
