Every year, over 70 million passengers use Heathrow airport. Heathrow’s vision is to make every journey better and the transformation of Heathrow continues at a fast pace. Every year around £1 billion is being invested in modernising the airport. This investment is currently focussed on the construction of the new Terminal 2. This new facility will open on 4th June 2014 and will accommodate up to 20 million passengers per year. There are other major improvements under way to the Terminal 3 baggage system and also passenger experience improvements in Terminals 3 and 4. Heathrow is also currently re-surfacing its two runways. Heathrow is a keen sponsor of the NCE Graduate Awards as Heathrow wants to see the next generation of civil engineering talent working on the continuous improvement at the airport and recently Heathrow has created its own graduate programme which includes a number of civil engineering graduates.


HIGH SPEED 2. The Government is committed to creating a world-class high speed rail network (HS2) that will act as an engine for growth and deliver the largest transport infrastructure investment in the UK for a generation. HS2 Ltd, the company responsible for developing the project, will be supporting engineering jobs for students through initiatives in schools, further and higher education, plus a programme of apprenticeships and internships. Over 2,000 apprentices could be employed in construction related jobs on HS2. This will boost the UK's engineering skills and later benefit other British projects and industries. In addition it is expected there will be apprentice opportunities in rolling stock manufacture as well as non-construction roles. Even at this relatively early stage - through HS2 Ltd’s contractors - over 800 graduate trainees and apprentices have worked on the project. For further information please go to

Thames Tideway Tunnel is a proud sponsor of the NCE Graduate Awards 2013, recognising the important contribution young engineers are making to the industry. TRANSPORT FOR LONDON is the body responsible for the capital’s public transport network: 580km of London’s busiest roads, 486km of underground and overground track that enable 26M trips every day.
